The story behind my article on Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch that was featured in V16N1 of the Home School Digest...
In January of 2005 I met Kim Meeder in Nashville, Tennesee. I interviewed her for www.faithtalks.com and after getting to know her a little bit she invited me to come visit her at their ranch, Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch in Central Oregon. She also gave me a copy of her book, Hope Rising. Kim warned me that I would want to have a box of tissue handy, so I did so, but little did I know how often I would reach for them! I literally cried my way through that heart touching masterpiece of a book.
I decided at that point that I did indeed have to go and see this place for myself and spend more time getting to know Kim. I didn't have to wait long. In April that dream came true. Armed with a digital camera, my trusty recording equipment and surrounded by a small band of friends I had an experience that I will never forget.
We spent the day with Kim and the CPYR staff. After enjoying an early lunch at the only restaurant in proximity, Kim gave us the inspiring tour of the ranch, I interviewed staff, we watched volunteers, and observed the children. Once all the data had been gathered Kim encouraged us to cut loose and go do something just for fun, so we all loaded into her pick-up and she drove us to Smith Rocks to hike "Misery Ridge."
It was a breathtaking day and I came away truly in awe of the work that God had done in and through Troy and Kim Meeder and CPYR and personally moved beyond words. With much help from my friend Elysse the story turned into a four page feature in Home School Digest. If you haven't seen it, I would strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of the issue. It's well worth the five bucks! Go to: http://www.homeschooldigest.com/pastv16.htm
